Dehydration is a common complaint during hot and humid weathers. This is because humidity can make you feel hotter. That’s why a 320C can feel like 380C if the humidity level is as high as 65%!
Our body has its own mechanism to maintain the core body temperature of 370C. When the temperature gets too hot outside, our body acts quickly to cool down the body by means of producing sweat, a process also known as thermoregulation. When this sweat comes in contact with the air, it evaporates cooling down the body.
However, during monsoon, when humidity level is at its peak, the moisture in the air hinders the evaporation of sweat and hence you feel hot and sticky, which thereby triggers the body to release more sweat to cool itself further. This action causes body to work harder while heating up the system inside.
Importance of hydration –
Our body is made up of 70% water which is concentrated in all our cells. Dehydration strips the cells of water and vital minerals and hence a person feels tired, lethargic and dizzy. Dehydration during monsoon can happen to anyone of any age. Therefore, it is very important to drink ample amount of mineral water to replenish body’s mineral balance and maintain a healthy temperature.
“During monsoon people prefer multiple cups of hot beverages like coffee or tea over plain water and hence they do not realise how little water they have consumed. You may not even realise you are dehydrated until you start feeling giddy or have muscle cramps. Even a 2% decrease in body’s water weight can lead to problems like forgetfulness, confusion and visual disturbance1. On an average an adult needs 2-3 litres of water daily to stay well hydrated” says Clinical Nutritionist, Geetanjali Chitale.
She shares some excellent tips to stay hydrated in monsoon –
The importance of right hydration in one’s diet cannot be overstated. Hence, it is important to stay well hydrated and enjoy the rains. Happy monsoon!
